2024 kdrama post
We are already in December and nothing new I am likely to be interested in is gonna drop before the end of the year - and if it does it will run into 2025 so I can address it in my 2025 kdrama post, unless we are all ruled by lizard aliens by then.
Normally I list all the dramas made this year that I watch, thoughts on them, blah blah but this year I disliked most of the kdramas I tried (it was the worst kdrama year for me since 2006 when I first started!) and I don't want to make a giant negative post, so I am going to only mostly talk about the kdramas I enjoyed in some capacity.
From least to most:
Love Your Enemy - I don't really like it tbh, but it's here for nostalgia over JJH.
Tell Me You Love Me - good and quiet but suffers in comparison to the original and that FL actress is just not my cup of tea.
Connection - Ji Sung gives a powerhouse performance in a very solid crime drama; it's not higher because it's just not my genre.
The Midnight Shop - it was nice seeing Joo Won in not a disaster of a drama. It wasn't as engrossing as it could have been but I did like both the mains and rooted for them.
Knight Flower - was I emotionally involved? Nah. Was I entertained? Yeah.
The Judge From Hell - "was I emotionally involved? Nah. Was I entertained? Yeah." Redux.
Queen of Tears - honestly, it should probably be in the below category but I enjoyed myself for the first half so much, I am willing to pretend the nonsense disaster plots and character interactions of second half were not as bad as they were.
My Demon - sucker for supernatural romance fantasy done right (to me it was, I know some people didn't like it.)
Goryeo Khitan War - I put it on my 2023 list too so it's double dipping but whatever. This is just a grand old school sageuk and I adored every moment.
Lovely Runner - normally youth dramas bore me but this one was so sweet, so lovely, so pitch perfect.
Black Out - did not really feel like a kdrama at all, more like a prestige BBC production, but I loved it anyway, as bleak and harrowing as it was.
When the Phone Rings - my current obsession, old school melo the way they haven't made in years.
The sad thing is, a number of these dramas started airing in 2023 and/or beginning of the year. Most of this year has been the Sahara.
Dramas which I enjoyed off the start and then fell off the cliff into what the hell land: Captivating the King (wonderful first 4-5 episodes, OK few following, stupid as hell the rest - solid acting brought down by a ridiculous script), The Story of Park's Marriage Contract (great first two eps and then downhill rapidly with each following episode), Love Song For Illusion (first ep not bad, second ep tolerable, after that with each ep, my ff fingers got twitchier and twitchier.)
OTP of the year: Duh, Baek Sa Eon x Hong Hui Joo, When the Phone Rings, have you seen this tumblr lately?
Trend I wish would die: 8 ep kdramas, 12 ep kdramas. Bring back freaking 16 ep as a minimum standard. Also pls get Disney and Netlfix out of kdrama world while we are on impossible wishes.
Genre I need less of: romcoms; Genre I need more of: proper sageuk.
Worst waste of my eyeballs: The Impossible Heir.
Most boobs per minute: Queen Woo.
Best non-2024 kdrama I watched this year: Beyond Evil. A total masterpiece.
And that's a wrap!
(My cdrama post is gonna be insane in comparison to this.)

melo youre insane you just dropped that sungchan finger fucking masterpiece... and the last anton ask and the eunseok ones too made me feel dizzy omfg
also im going crazy over antons new hair hes soooo 😩 been thinking abt making out with him while sitting on his lap, running my hands through his hair and tugging it, also feeling him getting hard 🫠
- 🐱
i feel insane like clinically insane over sungchan i don’t know how to handle it other than by posting deranged things LMAO.
do think anton would love having you sat on his lap when making out, he’d love feeling you grinding down against him and he’d love having you pulling on his hair. he’d be so relaxed with the feeling of your fingers running through his hair, would let out content sighs against your lips that turn into deeper groaning when you tug on the ends of it. would love having you ride him there too, not bothering to rid yourselves of any clothes, just pushing aside anything that’s in the way so he can feel you wrapped bare around him

Oh i thought because you like ancient Greek mythology you would like neoclassicism. But of course it's not the same because the ancient Greek marbles were extraordinary and inspired the neoclassicism which was European but unfortunately Greeks were participated in this :(
I think the question was what I find interesting, not what I like. I like a lot of things that I don't find interesting, and lot of things I don't like catch my interest.
however, I did include neoclassicism in my answer, as partly overlapping/ being included in academic art, but not because of its rather superficial relation to ancient greek mythology or ancient greece. I really like observing the skill and knowledge it showcases, so that's why it is interesting to me. I like a lot of ancient greek art in the same way that I like all art, that is to say, sometimes because of the concept (be is something funny or unique etc) , sometimes because it's stylized in a way that I enjoy, sometimes because I admire the skill, and sometimes because it's showing me something interesting, like pottery drawings that show mundane every day things. The vast majority of art we have from anceint greece as a whole isn't like hermes of praxiteles or the doryphoros or any other masterpiece. Masterpieces were and still are few and far between, in general. Drawing and painting in europe after the rennaisance was miles ahead of ancient greek drawing and painting in terms of skill. I don't see anything particularly extraordinary about ancient greek sculpture specifically, the same type of masterpieces were made in rome later, in the rennaisance and even nowadays, whenever artists had enough resources and the overall art climate was leaning towards more realistic renderings. The artists back then and the artists now are the same type of human. It so happened that in an area with excellent climate, wealth sources such as silver mines and overseas trade and a frankly huge amount of easily available marble, as well as political and social curcumstances that nurished the arts, this type of sculpture was developed and flourished, but drawing on centuries of experience, and prior influence from the monumental works of the ancient egyptians, at the very beginning. that's all to say that I don't think it's good to have an idealised idea of ancient greek art and we need to shake that way of thinking off asap. We must go to a museum and look at all the things, not just the 2 famous, exceptional exhibits, if we want to talk about an entire culture's (or often, slightly different sub culutures included in the same overall category) artwork. That pottery piece with the funny hoplite owl means so much more to me than the aphrodite of melos, who I frankly neither like as an art piece nor care about (and that's fine because we all have our completely subjective preferences for art), and the overwhelming majority of art from minoan to hellenistic times leans more towards the first in terms of what I would call measurable skill for lack of a better word.
TL:DR That's an inexcusably long rant form my part to say that I don't think the neoclassical masterpieces were in any objective way infrerior to the masterpieces from the 5th or 4th century bce. PS There's a lot that's been said and can be said about the west's greek-excluding perception of ancient greece so i won't get into that now.
#why are you people letting me talk I will just go on nonsense rants#im sorry anon#I'm just so sick of the ancient greek masterpiece narrative and maybe that's partly a reaction to how prevalent it is but i just get#idk i get upset. because there are so many wonderful things to appreciate about ancient cultures' works and not all of them are the#conventionally approved of ideals#am i makign any sense#oh look im continuing the rant in the tags ashdhglmao

[REVIEW] Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
4/5 stars (★★★★)
"I don't feel better. I feel like a meme of a clueless white person."
I'm convinced R.F. Kuang was possessed by a white woman when she wrote this book, and I mean that in a half impressed, half discomforted way. I'm seeing that some people are having difficulty separating the voice of "Junie" from Kuang's, but as I read the novel it was never difficult for me to pick out which was which. I think Kuang makes a lot of sharp, witty, and bold statements -- some of them were even metatextual, which I enjoyed -- that, at the very least, proves her intelligence as a person, scholar, and a writer. This is the first book I've read of Kuang's, and from what I can see from her oeuvre it's a bit on the unserious side, but even in Yellowface I could tell I'm listening to a woman who knows her craft well and has dedicated a lot of thought on even the most simple turns of phrase or throwaway comments present in the text. Not every novel is a masterpiece, and this certainly wasn't, but I believe it showed off her talents all the same.
I had fun with Junie as the unreliable narrator of narrators. I hated her, but I hated pretty much everybody in the book. I never once liked Athena, anyone on Junie's publishing team, or even the people like Candice who were rallying for Junie's downfall. Everybody was grotesquely unlikeable, condescending, pretentious, and just overall bad vibes, which made the commentary on narrative and "what story people will believe" all the better and more hard-hitting for me. It doesn't matter who's right or what's true, it matters who has the balls to survive in such a cutthroat world that always has its eyes and claws on you and everything you say. (C'est la publishing and promoting yourself in this hellscape of influencers, marketing, and late-stage neo-capitalism, I suppose). Yellowface, especially near the end, becomes dystopic, thriller, and horror in its implications and ruminations on a litany of things like race and gender politics, "maybe-rape," online surveillance, cyber bullying, etc. It's a very timely novel. The discourse felt satirical -- almost darkly absurdist in many ways, but I've been online -- specifically in online bookish communities -- to know Kuang was drawing from real life when she wrote this book. It really is a shitshow out there. The "Twitterati" comments, exchanges, and developments all turned out exactly like I'd expected it to based on years of disillusioned experience. The (melo)drama was a large reason why I enjoyed this book: it's criticism and even satire of the bookish online community, the "Twitterati," the modern-day publishing industry and its problem with tokenism (amongst other things), and the horror and loneliness of trying to "make it" in the digital age … All of it was masterfully done. Granted, I think Kuang's portrayal of Junie's world is overexaggerated and even contorted to somewhat extreme proportions, but the spectacle of it kept me reading.
I liked how the book started out as Junie's shitty self defending manifesto, and then suddenly it was deep, multilayered introspection on the themes of guilt, authorship, sociopolitics, etc. I also loved the Lady Macbeth motif (The parts when Junie keeps fruitlessly refreshing all her social media feeds knowing nothing is going to happen except plunge her deeper into her downward spiral was a great reworking of the infamous handwashing scene). I think some of the best parts in the book where when Junie was at her worst and when you realize she's truly lost her marbles nearer the end; it's really when Kuang is at her most ruthless and observant. (I snorted out loud every time she "concluded" she was" the victim). Overall, Junie's characterization was brilliant, though I will say it was a bit on the flat side. I wished Kuang expanded more on her relationship with her family, her childhood, and why she loved writing so much, but I think she meant to deliberately keep that side of Junie hidden to maintain her unlikeable nature. (And I'm honestly not overeager to learn about the autobiographical facts of an upper middle class Ivy League graduate white woman who's simultaneously so self-aware yet so incredibly out of touch. I don't think Kuang wanted to either). Her unnecessary, microaggressive comments on how much she hated Chinese food and the smell of it, her insistence that what she was doing and the things she thought/believed "weren't racist" in spite of her never actually having a single moment in the book where she truly reflects on her whiteness, her "not wanting" to associate with the newfound MAGA and right-wing supporters that she accidentally gained through her own controversy but celebrating the up in sales anyway … I thought Kuang executed it really well. Junie is a realistic caricature. (I rolled my eyes when she pulled out the "reverse racism" card). Her fragile vindictiveness, along with Athena's insufferable personality and fatal success, were strikingly real. I've met both these women, and I'm sure you have too. That being said, at no point do I believe Kuang wants us to take Junie's "side" or overly sympathize with her beyond what's humanely obligatory. The same treatment was kind of given to Athena. As an Asian person (albeit a Southeast Asian one), I feel for her words, ideas, and concepts being "stolen" by a white "colleague," and I can understand the pressure she must've felt in that glitz and glamour world she surreptitiously maintained until her literal final moments. But I hated her all the same.
I have a lot more thoughts on the racial commentary in this book, as well as how Kuang is both astute yet also limited in her observations about the publishing industry, literacy, and popular media + cultural climate as it is inside and outside of social media. I don't want to get into them on here, however. I do think that Yellowface panders more to a "liberal," white feminist audience rather than a minority one, in spite of all my praise for it on here. As someone involved in the literary realm and its age-old discourses, I found this book entertaining and interrogative; definitely worth its bestseller status. As a brown Southeast Asian woman who both Junie and Athena wouldn't have ever given a second glance, I'm quite tired of having these same basic conversations over and over.

My Music Lyfe
youtube
Lauryn Hill- “ I Gotta Find A Peace Of Mind”(Blues)
Theme: Mental Health
This musical masterpiece represents trying to find yourself, especially during hard times. I chose this piece because it encourages people to put themselves first even if they think it’s impossible. She says phrases such as “ He says it’s impossible, but I know it's possible,” implying that it can always happen even through the hate of someone doubting you loving yourself. Lauryn Hill uses a poetic tone throughout the song to give the audience the feeling that she’s talking strictly to them. This plays with the emotion by spreading courage because with this piece of work, she basically telling a story as well of the man she’s dealing with telling her that she could be nothing without him which a lot of women could relate to being with or dealing with a man as such.
youtube
Sean Kingston- “Beautiful Girl”(Pop)
Theme: Heartbreak
Kingston acknowledges the beauty in this particular girl but also uses words such as, “suicidal” to show the heartbreak a girl could give a young boy when they both thought they had what we consider love and that they would be together forever. Creating a sad emotion toward the audience but the tempo of the beat allows the body to flow due to the culture behind it.
youtube
Rod Wave- “Long Journey”( Rap)
Theme- Success
I chose this song because it represents the journey that you took to get to where you at now for me going through regular schooling to be able to get to college where I am at has been a success for me and an eye opener. Through the Melo flow of his voice, he explains his story of coming from nothing to being able to take care of everyone around him including his twin daughters. Through the song, he continues to thank God for being able to make away for him to make a difference and using him to be able to make this change. He uses the phrase “ Kept the devil away from us” Implying that God kept evil away to bring good instead.
youtube
Tracy Chapman- "Fast Car"( Country)
Theme- Parent Love
I enjoy this piece so much I love the original but I also enjoy the Luke Combs version as well this piece doesn't really relate to me, but I just love the flow of the song and mainly the beat. This piece makes me happy just because of her voice and the tone which give off a soothing relaxing feeling in a song just to sit back and enjoy. Through this piece, she explains her quitting school to be able to take care of her elderly father because she felt like that was her duty and calling.
youtube
Zapp & Roger- "Computer Love"( Electric)
Theme- The Technology of Love
I enjoy listening to this old classic which was introduced to me by my mother. This song refers to computer love which explains the love between two individuals and how they use the techniques of an computer to be able to find each other. He uses phrases such as " Ar you that beautiful girl on my computer screen." which gives and audience a view that he's found his one and only girl on this device.

Dying Wish - Symptoms Of Survival
Two years ago, metalcore band Dying Wish dropped their debut album, 2021’s Fragments Of A Bitter Memory, and I really enjoyed it. I first heard of them through Knocked Loose’s 2019 masterpiece, A Different Shade Of Blue, where their vocalist was featured, but their debut album was a great mix of modern metalcore with an early 00s “Gothenburgcore,” or metalcore bands that were influenced by 90s Swedish melodic-death metal bands like Entombed or At The Gates, but it had its own slight unique edge to it. Dying Wish helped to bring that nostalgic sound of metalcore back into the fold, and it was cool to be influenced by the early 00s again. The album wasn’t super unique, despite being influenced by something that wasn’t popular (especially when nu-metal was huge in metalcore at that same time), but it was good. It was one of my favorites of the year, and I was excited for where this band would go next.
Well, in a move that doesn’t shock me much, the band pretty much made the same album twice with Symptoms Of Survival, although they tweaked their sound just enough to make it stand out, and I always love when bands do that. This album is still very heavy, including some sick breakdowns throughout its 32-minute runtime, but they do utilize more melody and catchier moments here. Vocalist Emma Bolster uses her clean vocals a lot, and they sound even better here than they did on the debut, although they were quite good. The album has a lot of really cool riffs, too, that harken back to the early 00s metalcore scene where bands were influenced by melo-death, and they use that to their advantage. This record has just enough death metal oomph that I could see a death metal fan getting into this, even if they typically go for metalcore.
The only real issue I have with this record is that it does sound like their debut. They only slightly expand on their sound, but they do it enough to make their new one stick out on its own, albeit very barely. It’s enough to make this one worth a listen, but if you were expecting more from the debut, you may like this one more, although it’s barely an elevation. I enjoy this record a lot, because I enjoy their brand of metalcore, but it did leave me feeling slightly disappointed. Not enough to say that this album is bad, or not worth your time at all, but I haven’t spent much time with this for that reason.
